Patient and staff safety are of paramount concern to healthcare providers and facility design can play an integral part in the support of safety and reduction of harm. A framework that is used by health professionals in the design of the health system for safety and quality comes from the framework introduced by the Institute of Medicine’s seminal report Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century, the six quality aims. Using this framework, healthcare leaders and facility design professionals can collaborate to create an environment that supports the healthcare provider to ensure patient safety and quality outcomes. In this presentation, we will outline some of the design principles instituted during our recent construction projects and make suggestions regarding future improvements that could have meaningful impact on patient outcomes and quality of care and provider engagement and satisfaction.
